On behalf of the Government and the People of the Republic of Kenya, it gives me a great pleasure, to welcome Mr. Athanassios Skordas, Greek Deputy Minister of Development and his distinguished delegation to Kenya.

We appreciate and acknowledge the warm and cordial relations between the Republic of Kenya and Greece which we have enjoyed since independence. Your presence here signifies the commitment by your Government to deepening the economic relations between the two countries.

This historic visit comes at a time when we recently successfully carried out the first general election under our new constitutional dispensation. We therefore thank you for the confidence that you have shown in us, by taking this early opportunity to visit our Country and engage with various Government officials and the private sector.

As the biggest economy within the East African Community (EAC) region and the gateway to the larger Common Market for East and Southern African (COMESA) trading block, Kenya remains an important investment destination of choice in the region with a fast growing market. The Country offers a conducive environment for doing business and was ranked in the top ten amongst the African countries in the Cost of Doing Business Index in 2012.

Being the birthplace of modern civilization, having a developed economy with high standards of living and a flourishing service sector, the Hellenic Republic of Greece offers valuable lessons for the emerging developing world including Kenya. It is our strong belief that this visit will strengthen relations between the two Countries and enable business communities of both countries to steer trade relations to greater heights.

We take this opportunity to express our thanks to the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic of Greece to Kenya for this far sighted initiative and their hard work, which has brought us to this point. Similarly, we do recognize the role which was played by Kenya’s Honorary Consulate in Greece, for putting in place preparations towards this important visit.

We are looking forward to your pleasant stay and fruitful deliberations.
